  • Théâtre musical de Besançon — Identity

Le Théâtre musical de Besançon (dir. Loïc Boissier) was created in 2008: it occupies Besançon Municipal Theater, an exceptional building by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux. The theater is designed according to a very innovative circular plan for the time (1786), which made it possible, in Ledoux's initial project, to see the scene from everywhere. This aspect is represented in a famous engraving, “View of the Besançon Theater in an eye”. This eye and the circle are the basis of the visual identity that I designed for the Theater. To illustrate the richness and variety of its programming, an extensive color code (which covers the entire spectrum) makes it possible to identify the different registers. The character used is the Bodoni ITC, from Sumner Stone, my favorite digital revival of the typeface cut by Giambattista Bodoni in the same year as the construction of this theater. It’s been progressively replaced by my own revival, shown here in the logotype : Mononi, a mono-linear Bodoni.

Besançon is the birthplace of utopian socialism : Fourier, Proudhon or Victor Hugo were born here, and, in the 20th Century, huge strikes and social movements tried to implement ideas for a new society. In 2010, I was commissioned by the City to create a work of art in tribute to this historic heritage. I proposed a series of posters that would be installed on all of the city's billboards for a week. These posters expose the theories of Charles Fourier (1772-1837) and the “Théories des quatre mouvements et des destinées générales”. During the day, they show our current society. At night, when the poster is backlit, they show society as Fourier dreamed it. In collaboration with Elsa Maillot.

In the first seasonal program of the Théâtre musical, special care is given to the texts: I proposed to keep a "literary" aspect, by grouping the photographs in a separate quire. Printed on a different paper, it offers another, transversal reading of the season. In the interior pages, the colored pads identify the register: Theater, Dance, Opera, etc.

The theater is located on the port of Rouen, surrounded by (and partly built with) containers. These containers inspired the visual identity of the theater : the wordmark is set in a special weight of Garaje 0703 Monospace Black, in a frame that takes the shape of the facade of the building.
